UMMC staff gain new insight into dementia
Dixie Myrick, primary care service line director, works to complete tasks - including folding five pairs of socks - with impaired senses while Dr. Dennis Watts, associate professor in the School of Health Related Professions, orients himself for his turn during the Virtual Dementia Tour Sept. 27 in the Clinical Skills Assessment Center at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center.
Groups of Medical Center faculty and staff took part in the tour, which builds understanding and empathy among caregivers and health-care professionals by teaching them about the physical and mental challenges facing those living with dementia.
The Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities and the MIND Center organized and hosted the event with simulation provider Second Wind Dreams. Organizers hope to include dementia simulation in UMMC schools' curricula.
