A gathering of researchers descended upon the Norman C. Nelson Student Union at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on March 31 to present their findings to a group of judges during the annual Department of Medicine Research Day.
Joining the DOM researchers were younger investigators with the Medical Student Research Program who jointly participated in the research day events.
Research projects ranging from cancer's impact on bone structure to kidney injury to metabolic syndrome were on display during the event's poster contest. While presented jointly to various judges, the Department and MSRP each handed out awards for the best presentations.
Additionally, MSRP participants gave oral presentations earlier in the morning, with those judged the best being honored later during the award ceremony.
Dr. Gailen Marshall, professor of medicine and pediatrics and vice chair for research, said the purpose of Research Day is to recognize the trainees who continue to push the department forward with their commitment to research.

For his work with mentoring researchers, Dr. Ervin Fox was given the 2015 Herbert Langford Research Mentor Award.
Marshall said Fox was known as a role model for junior investigators, fellows and students.
"It's not that I can stand here and help a lot of students without receiving a lot of help myself," Fox said in his acceptance speech. "I have to thank my research team for all their support."
Though in existence for two years, 2015 marked the first time the Stanley Chapman Young Investigator Award was given, said Marshall.

This year's recipient, Dr. Michael Hall, was granted the honor for demonstrating high potential for a successful career as a physician-scientist, Marshall added.
In between the presentations and the awards, Dr. Richard Summers, associate vice chancellor for research, was featured as the keynote speaker. Delivering a presentation on the history of the scientific method, Summers urged researchers to take advantage of the giant leaps that have been made in the scientific field, even within the last several years.
Summers pointed out that Dr. Arthur Guyton, one of UMMC's most prolific researchers, helped change the shape of research in the 1960s when he used computer technology to study biology.
"This is a revolution of science that few people understand occurred right here on campus,"
The Department of Medicine and Medical Student Research Program teamed up on March 31 to hold a joint Research Day.
