An inconvenient truth: Construction to roil campus access

As development of the new School of Medicine Building and Parking Garage C proceeds throughout the spring at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, streets will be closed, shuttle bus routes will be diverted and parking spaces will be reassigned.

That’s hardly news to UMMC employees and students who have learned to navigate various roadblocks and construction zones on and around campus in recent months. According to Medical Center officials, the temporary inconveniences associated with parking and travel disruptions are all about the Medical Center’s future.

Nicole Reese, director of planning and design, said despite the toll campus development may take on pedestrians in the short term, the construction projects are vital to sustaining UMMC’s prosperity.

“This will benefit our patients, students and employees for decades to come,” Reese said. “In the meantime, we are striving to make all traffic flow transitions as smooth as possible.”

Campus facilities staff add that they will do their best to accommodate shuttle service passengers and to communicate any revisions to shuttle routes well in advance.

The coordinated effort will include six primary projects that will impact vehicle and pedestrian traffic on the northeast side of UMMC’s main campus.

Updates on pending traffic changes will be posted on the Medical Center’s Intranet News Feed throughout the construction cycle. For more information or questions about construction-related projects, email parking@umc.edu.

Map 1 - Peachtree Drive

Peachtree Drive leading from Lakeland Drive between the Norman C. Nelson Student Union and the School of Health Related Professions has been closed in front of the Verner Holmes Learning Resource Center and will no longer be a thoroughfare. Instead, the street will lead to a circular driveway in front of the soon-to-be-constructed School of Medicine building, which will serve as a "drop-off" point for pedestrians, similar to the drive in front of the new University Heart facility.

Gold Line shuttle bus stop 12 in front of the SHRP building will remain active. The estimated completion date of the circular driveway on Peachtree Drive is Sunday, June 1.

Map 2 - School of Medicine

Formal Notice to Proceed on construction of the School of Medicine building, which will take up Parking Lot 19, is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 16. Central University Drive will terminate on the west side of the medical school at its intersection with Peachtree Street and on the east side of the medical school at Parking Lot 20 in front of the School of Dentistry building. Lot 20 will remain open, but will only be accessible via East University Drive.

Map 3 - East Campus Roadway - Phase One

Phase One of the east campus roadway project is scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 16. East University Drive between Central University Drive and the side entrance to the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center will be closed.

Vehicle traffic to the University Physicians Pavilion from the north will be cut off, and the Pavilion will be accessed from South University Drive only.

Green Line shuttle service to the Pavilion will be shut down. Passengers who normally ride the Green Line shuttle may use the Blue Line shuttle to stop 17 to access the Pavilion.

Map 4 - East Campus Roadway - Phase One

Phase One also will include construction of two temporary drives from South University Avenue into the southeastern corner of Parking Lot 14. The drives will take up spaces in Parking Lot 14.

The temporary drives are estimated to be open approximately May 18, pending weather.

Map 5 - East Campus Roadway - Phase Two

Phase Two of the east campus roadway project is scheduled to begin approximately 45 to 60 days after Phase One starts - or sometime in April or May. During Phase Two, the remainder of East University Drive will be closed, and employees and patients will use the temporary drives to access the Pavilion.

The projected completion of this roadway project is approximately the end of May 2016.

The entrance to Parking Lot 14 will be closed, but those who will retain Lot 14 parking spaces will be able to access the lot using the temporary employee drive. The secondary VA entrance from East University Drive will be closed, and access to the VA will be limited to South University Drive. VA employees may use the north entrance to the VA from the road leading to the UMMC Laundry.

When completed, East University Drive will be a brand-new road, Pavilion patients will be able to use the regular Pavilion entrance, and Green Line shuttle service will be restored. The temporary Pavilion employee drive will become permanent, and employees will thereafter enter the Pavilion from South University Drive.
