UMMC first pancreas transplant news conference

Media Contact: Jack Mazurak at 601-984-1970 or jmazurak@umc.edu.

WHAT: UMMC’s first pancreas transplant recipient, doctors, to discuss operation

WHEN: 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13

WHERE: UMMC Department of Surgery conference room, James Hardy Clinical Sciences Building, UMMC Campus

WHY: In a first for both UMMC and all of Mississippi, surgeons transplanted a pancreas on Dec. 5. The milestone operation both gives a 49-year-old Mississippi man suffering from type 1 diabetes a significantly better quality of life, and marks completion of the UMMC abdominal transplant program. The program can now provide kidney, liver and pancreas transplants while keeping Mississippians close to home.

DIRECTIONS AND PARKING: Meet at the Division of Public Affairs. From Interstate 55, exit at Lakeland Drive West. Enter the UMMC campus at the fourth light, turning left on Peachtree Street. Continue on Peachtree to the three-way stop. The Learning Resources Center building will be directly in front of you. Turn left and then make an immediate right to park in front of the Learning Resource Center building. Buzz in at the gate and tell the attendant you are here for a press conference. Public Affairs will be the first office on your left as you enter the building.
