Media Contact: Matt Westerfield at 601-984-1104 or

WHAT: The nonprofit organization Funds2Orgs will visit the University of Mississippi Medical Center to pick up 7,000 pairs of shoes that were collected during a Soles for Survivors Shoe Drive to benefit the Bone Marrow Transplant unit throughout the month of September. The effort has called upon the UMMC community and the Jackson metro area at large, and has received a tremendous response, including a Pearl Middle School student who made it part of a school-wide fundraising effort. Employees were encouraged to drop off unneeded shoes at drop boxes across the main UMMC campus as well as the Thad C. Cochran Jackson Medical Mall.

WHEN: 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8

WHERE: The Cancer Institute at the Jackson Medical Mall: Turn right upon entering the mall off Bailey Avenue.

WHY: Employees in the Division of Hematology's Bone Marrow Transplant Unit chose to launch a Soles for Survivors Shoe Drive to benefit the Bone Marrow Transplant and National Marrow Donation Program last month. The shoes that were collected will be refurbished and distributed to needy adults and children in impoverished nations around the world. The proceeds from Funds2Orgs will go toward the needs of bone marrow transplant patients, bone marrow drives and research.
