Media Contact: Matt Westerfield at 601-984-1104 or mwesterfield@umc.edu.

WHAT: Disaster/life support mass casualty drill

WHEN: 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 4

WHERE: The Mississippi State Fire Academy

WHY: UMMC’s Mississippi Center for Emergency Services will stage a training drill simulating a disaster scenario which would trigger a sudden influx of patients, media and concerned community members to a hospital.

The drill is the final event of a three-day training course with professionals from fire protection services, law enforcement, disaster management, emergency medical services, public health, medical/nursing staff from local hospitals, volunteers and other interested persons from across Mississippi.

The full scale mass-casualty drill is being conducted in collaboration with the Mississippi State Fire Academy, the Mississippi State Department of Health, Northwest Rankin Middle School and the Mississippi Army/Air National Guard.

Tents, helicopters, public safety vehicles, special effects such as smoke and explosion sounds and drill participants with mock injuries may be observed by motorists and pedestrians in the area. Local media outlets are asked to alert the public to not be alarmed if they see drill equipment and participants around the Mississippi State Fire Academy on Friday.
