Research consortium convenes to fight cancer

By Jack Mazurak

What: A two-day conference at the UMMC Cancer Institute will bring together scientists and physicians from nine Southeastern U.S. centers to continue their work in improving cancer research.

When: Opening session, 1 p.m. Monday, April 23 *NOTE* B-roll tour of the Cancer Institute imaging facilities 11 a.m.

Where: Jackson Medical Mall – UMMC conference room, Livingston Road entrance

Why: The consortium’s nine members, which represent five states and Puerto Rico, are collaborating to design population studies and drug clinical trials that include minorities, and to build tissue banks that better represent the region’s diversity. Research that more accurately reflects the genomics of different racial and ethnic groups will likely lead to more effective cancer treatments.
