Inpatient Care

Inpatient Care

University of Mississippi Medical Center inpatient behavioral health units use a multidisciplinary approach that focuses on improving the lifelong mental health of the patients seen here.

General Psychiatric Services

For general psychiatric patients, the adult behavioral unit on the UMMC campus is a unique inpatient setting. Patients with acute mental illness are treated by an expert multidisciplinary team. Examples of the types of mental illnesses treated include, but are not limited to, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders (including post-traumatic stress disorder) and personality disorders.

Neurobehavioral Services

For adults with acute medical conditions who also need acute psychiatric care, UMMC offers a separate, specialized inpatient neurobehavioral unit. This combined medical-psychiatric unit is uniquely designed to provide comprehensive medical and psychiatric care (provided these medical issues do not require telemetry, mechanical ventilation or critical care measures).

Additional services include assessment of complex disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. No other program in the region offers this type of specialized treatment for patients who have both medical and mental health disorders.

Advanced Program Benefits

Each unit offers private rooms, with multidisciplinary specialized healthcare providers, including psychiatrists, psychologists, case managers, social workers and recreational and occupational therapists. In addition to the individualized care plan created for each patient, the team facilitates patient and family education, group therapy, medication adjustments and close monitoring of behavior. Patients also have accessibility to the full range of services and specialists offered at the state’s only academic medical center.

For the convenience of patients and referring physicians, our units are open for admissions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A dedicated admissions specialist is also available to help coordinate all hospital in-takes, paperwork and scheduling.
