University of Mississippi Medical Center inpatient behavioral health units use a multidisciplinary approach that focuses on improving the lifelong mental health of the patients seen here.
For general psychiatric patients, the adult behavioral unit on the UMMC campus is a unique inpatient setting. Patients with acute mental illness are treated by an expert multidisciplinary team. Examples of the types of mental illnesses treated include, but are not limited to, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders (including post-traumatic stress disorder) and personality disorders.
For adults with acute medical conditions who also need acute psychiatric care, UMMC offers a separate, specialized inpatient neurobehavioral unit. This combined medical-psychiatric unit is uniquely designed to provide comprehensive medical and psychiatric care (provided these medical issues do not require telemetry, mechanical ventilation or critical care measures).Additional services include assessment of complex disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. No other program in the region offers this type of specialized treatment for patients who have both medical and mental health disorders.
