Professor of Nursing
Dr. Lisa Haynie’s career has included working as a staff nurse in a variety of settings, including maternal-newborn nursing, pediatrics, general medical-surgical nursing and women’s health. She also has worked as a family nurse practitioner for the Mississippi State Department of Health before joining the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing faculty in 1998. Describing her career as having the best of both worlds, she has the opportunity to do the two things she loves: take care of patients and teach nursing students. She presently teaches in the undergraduate program and participates in faculty practice as a family nurse practitioner at UNACARE Health Center, CARES and the Mercy Delta Express school-based mobile clinic. She has served as president of the Mississippi Nurses Foundation and is an active member of the Mississippi Nurses Association. She is a member of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and serves as board member for the UMMC School of Nursing Alumni Board. In addition, she consults with organizations regarding legal and regulatory issues in nursing. Her publications and presentations are primarily related to nursing education strategies, maternity nursing, access- to-care issues, school-based health and health disparities. She presently serves as a reviewer for the Journal of School Nursing and has received grant funding for several projects for which she has served as principal investigator in Jackson, Miss., and the Mississippi Delta. She seeks opportunities for funding and practice because she is passionate about eliminating health disparities and access-to-care issues affecting the medically underserved.
