    Students must demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information with patients, their families, and professional associates.


    1. Communicate effectively with patients and their families in the context of a culturally different setting and in the host community's language (Spanish) using translators if necessary.
    2. Communicate effectively with all members of the health care team regarding specific patient management issues.


    1. Discuss health issues and recommendations with a patient and family in a manner that is culturally appropriate.
    2. Show appropriate application of basic patient-centered principles as well as community strategies to improve health.
    3. Develop skills to address preventive health measures including prevention of certain infectious diseases and improving health through sanitation, safe water, and nutrition.
