After receiving the BS in biology from Samford University in 1976, Clay earned the MD at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1980. He did an internship from 1980-81, a general surgery residency from 1981-85 and a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency from 1985-87 at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He joined the faculty of East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, in 1987 as an assistant clinical professor of medicine and associate director of the Maxillofacial, Cleft Lip and Palate Evaluation Team at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. He served as an assistant professor of plastic surgery at the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, from 1990-2006, before become associate professor of plastic surgery there in 2007. He has served as a co-director of the Mayo Cleft Lip, Palate and Craniofacial Clinic and of the Mayo Cutaneous Laser Center, Rochester, MN. Formerly a major in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps, Clay is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Craniofacial Surgeons, American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association and the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. He is the co-author of more than two dozen articles in peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters. His main clinical areas are pediatric plastic surgery and laser surgery.
