The Department of Radiation Oncology strives to provide compassionate, state-of-the-art radiation treatment to cancer patients while continuing to teach the next generation of caregivers and find ever better ways to provide treatment.
Our department has a three-prong mission: to treat patients with compassionate, comprehensive, coordinated care; to educate students, residents and fellows in using the best technology available and in meeting patient’s needs; and to seek ever better ways to treat cancer with the hope of curing it. Each part of our mission was formulated with our patients in mind.
Radiation Oncology is a committed and integral part of the Cancer Institute at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Our staff work in two locations, using state-of-the-art technology and treatment methods to provide care for adult and pediatric patients.
The treatment facility at Jackson Medical Mall, opened in 2005, is part of UMMC’s effort to provide a full scope of cancer services in one location. The second facility is on the lower level of UMMC’s main hospital. It primarily provides treatment for pediatric patients and hospitalized adult patients. The location on the main campus also is central to UMMC’s education function.
Both locations have the latest technology and offer highly individualized services that will best help patients and families facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.
The Radiation Oncology team plays a vital role in meeting our patient care goals. Our team includes five radiation oncologists, who have appointments with the University of Mississippi Health Sciences Division and who are sectioned under the Department of Radiation Oncology, registered nurses, registered radiation therapists, certified physicists and dosimetrists, a dedicated dietitian, social workers, and several administrative staff members. All staff members are a key component to making patient flow as easy as possible.
The department is striving to become one of the top 20 centers in the country in patient care and education and provide non-discriminating state-of-the-art care with compassion and professionalism.
Radiation Oncology focuses on teaching the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer and certain nonneoplastic conditions using ionizing radiation. Department staff teach and train physicians and many other patient caregivers the skills needed to practice radiation oncology. The Radiation Oncology Residency Program has four approved residency positions and two approved physicists’ residency position. All are now filled.
Many on this staff work to find ways to make radiation treatment more effective. Efforts of some physicians here already have led to more effective treatment for some cancers. Physicians, physicists and research scientists may work together on many projects.
