Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). I am delighted that you are visiting our website and have an interest in exploring our programs. We have aligned our department’s mission according to the mission of the medical center, with a tripartite approach that involves clinical care, education, and research.
In order to provide the citizens of the state of Mississippi with the highest quality of clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, our team of psychologists and psychiatrists are trained according to the most up-to-date and effective approaches in the treatment of the full range of mental illnesses. We have a diverse group of providers who understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration, both within UMMC and with outside caregivers. All work is rooted in an atmosphere of caring, compassion, and respect, with a full appreciation for the need to eliminate health disparities in our region of the country.
Education is another high priority in the department, with emphasis placed on teaching and training excellence for medical students, resident physicians, and graduate students. Several of our faculty members have received awards from the medical school for their superior skills as teachers, and the internship program in the Division of Psychology is widely regarded as one of the best in the country. Our department believes strongly in the importance of giving medical students an appreciation for the importance of mental health and for providing our resident and graduate student trainees with the best possible learning environment such that they are well-equipped to handle any challenge they may encounter during their careers.
Research completes the tripartite mission for the department, with our scientists and academically-minded faculty ranking third overall currently at UMMC in NIH funding. Our dedicated and committed team of neurobiologists, psychologists, and psychiatrists has a full range of research projects underway and takes pride in their achievements thus far. Representing the only academic medical center in the state, the department’s faculty feels a deep obligation and drive to advance our knowledge of human behavior and mental illness through discovery in basic and clinical research. Four members of our faculty were recently recognized with major research awards by the medical center, the most awards given to any single department in the 2014-15 academic year.
Thank you for visiting our website. I hope you maintain a strong interest in the many great things we are doing in Mississippi in the area of mental health.
