  • Pediatric Neurosurgery

The University of Mississippi Medical Center enjoys an extensive Pediatric Neurosurgery referral system from the entire state of Mississippi as well as portions of surrounding states. Dr. Andrew Parent is head of the Pediatric Section of the Department of Neurosurgery.

There is a wide variety of clinical conditions, including pediatric brain tumors, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, pediatric trauma, pediatric cerebrovascular malformations, CNS infections, spinal cord tumors, and pediatric epilepsy surgery. A resident completing training at UMMC is very well versed in the care of pediatric neurosurgical patients. The patient census on the pediatric neurosurgery service ranges from 15 to 25, including patients in the neonatal intensive care unit and the pediatric intensive care unit. A resident is intimately involved in the day-to-day management of these patients and participates in all surgeries.

Over 200 major pediatric operations are performed at UMMC each year. A strong pediatric residency with all the sub-specialties in pediatrics including pediatric neurology, provides another strength of the program. The comprehensive multidisciplinary clinics, which include a spina bifida clinic, pediatric brain tumor clinic and a craniofacial clinic are further cutting-edge services that demonstrate the excellency of the program.
