The School of Medicine was moved from Oxford, Mississippi, where it had operated since 1903 and opened in Jackson on July 1, 1955. The Graduate Programs in the Health Sciences operated under the auspices of the Graduate School of the University of Mississippi in Oxford when the Medical Center was established in Jackson. In 2001, the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences at UMMC in Jackson was authorized by the Board of Trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning. The Graduate School is one of five schools on campus.

Over 200 graduate faculty members are involved in a wide range of cutting-edge biomedical research that is supported by extramural grants totaling over $60 million. The graduate faculty members also teach over 225 health sciences related courses. The current enrollment in the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences is approximately 200 students. Our success at training research scientists is underscored by the fact that UMMC graduates are currently employed as faculty or staff at numerous medical centers, universities, research institutes, governmental agencies, and biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Our goals in the Graduate School are clear:

    • Train highly qualified researchers who will make significant contributions to the scientific literature.
    • Educate those who will train the next generation of biomedical scientists and health care professionals
    • Foster the spirit of scientific inquiry.
    • Promote an environment that embraces diversity and cultural differences.

Prospective student, current student or visitor, we welcome you to experience the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences at UMMC.
