    Biographical Information

    Dr. Neva Penton Eklund, associate professor of pediatric and public health dentistry, is a native of Sylacauga, Alabama. She earned her BS in psychology/pre-dentistry at Auburn University in 1987 and her DMD at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in 1992. From 1993-1995 she completed specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark, NJ. In 1995, she joined the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry faculty as clinical assistant professor of diagnostic sciences and continued her postdoctoral education at the Medical Center with a one-year fellowship in dental care of the immunocompromised patient. In 1997 Dr. Penton Eklund was appointed assistant professor, Departments of Pediatric Dentistry and Pediatrics (School of Medicine). In 2004, she was promoted to associate professor (tenured). Dr. Penton Eklund currently serves as chief of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry for the Department of Pediatrics and founding coordinator of the Children’s Hospital Dental Service for Children with Special Health Care Needs. In 2003, she was appointed as director of the School of Dentistry’s Postdoctoral Program in Pediatric Dentistry, the first postgraduate specialty program for the school. Dr. Penton Eklund is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is a member of the Rho Sigma chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society. She currently serves as Chair-Elect for the American Dental Education Association’s Section on Pediatric Dentistry as well as Coordinator for the State of Mississippi’s Special Olympics Special Smiles program. Dr. Penton Eklund holds membership in numerous professional organizations including the American Dental Association, the Mississippi Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dental Education Association, and has been newly selected as fellow in the International College of Dentists. Dr. Eklund is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including the American Association of Public Health Dentistry Award, Excellence in Classroom Instruction Award and the American College of Dentist Outstanding Faculty Award. At the University of Mississippi Medical Center, she serves on numerous committees including the National Center for Excellence in Women’s Health Leadership Core, the Pediatric Surgical Subspecialists group, the Pediatric Craniomaxillary Center interdisciplinary team, the Graduate Medical Education Committee and the Give Kids a Smile Day organizational committee. The coauthor or author of numerous publications and abstracts, her research interests include advocacy and oral health issues for vulnerable populations especially pediatric patients with special health care needs. Dr. Penton Eklund is a member of the Dental Chapter of the University of Mississippi Guardian Society and member of the Dental Alumni Board. She is active in her community as a member of the Mississippi Head Start Oral Health Advisory Board, a Wider Net missions project of Northminster Baptist Church, the Friends of Children’s Hospital and the Rotary Club of Jackson, Mississippi. . She is married to Dr. Jason Eklund also a 1992 University of Mississippi School of Dentistry graduate and they have one son, Graham.
