  • Clostridium Difficle-Associated Diarrhea

    Isolation requirements

    • Disease: Clostridium difficle-associated diarrhea (CDAD), antibiotic-associated colitis
    • Category: Contact
    • Infective material: Stool, however spores may cause wide-spread contamination of inanimate environment, especially in incontinent patients
    • Duration of isolation: Duration of illness
    • Comments: Discontinue offending antibiotic if possible. Private room required. Alcohol-based hand washes are not as effective as soap and water in removal of spores from hands. Place SPECIAL CDAD PRECAUTIONS sign on door, in addition to Contact Precautions sign. For disinfection of surfaces in patient's room, a 1:10 bleach solution is preferred to standard hospital disinfectants.
