    Acceptable Container(s):Container: Brown vials provided in commercial amniocentesis kits are recommended; plain red top
    Testing Schedule:Monday - Sunday
    Turn Around Time:STAT: NA
     Routine: 2 days, once sample has been received by reference laboratory.
    Collection Information:Amniotic Fluid obtained by amniocentesis is preferred. Vaginally obtained samples are satisfactory only if care is taken to obtain a "clean" sample. Specimens collected by amniocentesis must be protected from light after collection.
    Transport Information:Deliver to lab immediately. All specimens must be signed into the laboratory.
    Reference Clients:If unable to deliver to the lab within 1 hour, store and transport at -20° C within 24 hours.
    Causes for Rejection:Improperly labeled, incorrect container, contaminated, insufficent quantity, incorrect/delay in transport.
    Reference Range:Ratio of 1.4 or less indicates immaturity
     Ratio of 1.5-1.9 indicates a transitional condition
     Ratio of 2.0 or greater indicates maturity
    Additional Information:Vaginal pool specimen containing large amounts of mucus or other vaginal contamination are not acceptable. Meconium or blood in the specimen can cause erroneous results.
     Direct exposure to light must be avoided at all times.
