    Turn Around Time:Preliminary report at 24 hours; final report after 72 hours.
    Collection Information:Refer to Microbiology Collection Information by Source for source specific collection procedures, transport, quantity and special notes. * Do Not Refrigerate* Tube #2 or #3 should be submitted for culture. Collection time and date must be documented in the electronic record by the collector.
    Transport Information:Deliver to lab immediately. Do not refrigerate. All specimens must be signed into the laboratory. If the specimen is not received within 2 hours of collection, the following statement will appear in the report: ELECTRONIC RECORDS INDICATE RECOMMENDED TIME INTERVAL BETWEEN COLLECTION AND RECEIPT EXCEEDED. INTERPRET CULTURE RESULTS WITH CAUTION.
    Reference Client:Add 3 or 4 drops, or streak a Chocolate agar plate and place in a CO2 gas generating pouch system. Store and Transport at room temperature and deliver, along with what remains of the original sample, to the laboratory as soon as possible. Do not refrigerate.
    Causes for Rejection:Improperly labeled, incorrect container, contaminated, insufficient quantity, improper transport.
    Reference Range:No growth
    Additional Information:Gram stains are automatically ordered with a CSF culture. Susceptibilities are performed on significant isolates from CSF. It is the responsibility of the requesting physician to assure that all the tubes are labeled properly, orders are correctly placed., and collection time and date are documented in the electronic record.
     The physician is notified of any positive CSF culture or stain. If AFB or fungi are suspected, the cultures must be specifically requested and ordered in computer.
