  • UMMC Cancer Registry Accreditation

The UMMC Cancer Program was established in May 1957 with the adoption of the Constitution of the University Tumor Clinic. This officially began the program of multidisciplinary involvement in the management of patients with cancer.

The Cancer Registry is a part of the UMMC Cancer Program. The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons recently granted a three-year approval with commendation to the University of Mississippi Medical Center's Cancer Program. The three-year approval is given to programs that comply with all standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program. Approval with commendation demonstrates the UMMC exceeds the standards set for cancer programs in health care facilities.

The American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer is the accrediting agency for cancer programs. The Commission of Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.

The Medical Center first obtained approval of its cancer program in 1958.
