MPB’s Southern Remedy to focus on trauma

Mississippi Public Broadcasting has announced that its Southern Remedy franchise will begin airing a monthly news-style television program. The series comes in addition to the weekly “Southern Remedy” radio call-in show and periodic television documentaries. “We are looking forward to this new component of Southern Remedy,” said host Dr. Rick deShazo, the Billy S. Guyton Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at UMMC. “This monthly medium will give us an opportunity to cover more of the health news making headlines today.” The first episode is set to air Thursday, May 23 at 8:30 p.m. and will focus on the high rate of trauma cases in our state. In 2010, there were over 25,000 reported cases of trauma in Mississippi. “Trauma is the leading cause of death in Mississippi for people ages one to forty-four -- a pretty sobering statistic when you realize that most trauma is preventable,” said deShazo. deShazo will explore why this high rate of trauma exists in Mississippi and learn how the problem can be mitigated. He will speak with members of the trauma team at UMMC including Chief of Trauma Dr. John Porter and Professor of Pathology Dr. Brad Brimhall. deShazo will also hear from Michael Arinder with American Medical Response and from officials at the Mississippi Department of Health about the state-wide trauma system put in place to save lives in the quickest manner possible. “Southern Remedy” coverage of trauma will be followed by episodes highlighting bodybuilding in Mississippi, airing June 27, and the West Nile Virus, airing July 25.

Congenital heart program celebrates milestones

The congenital heart program at Batson Children’s Hospital celebrates its third anniversary today. The anniversary coincides with the completion of 1,000 cases with a success rate of over 98 percent. “Mississippi is now taking care of its own, with no patients or families needing to go out of state and with outcomes equal to the biggest and most established programs in the U.S.,” said Dr. Jorge Salazar, chief of pediatric and congenital heart surgery. Salazar said the milestone was achieved through the hard work and dedication of hundreds of staff members across all disciplines and departments at UMMC, along with partners in the community.
National accrediting body taps Woodward

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, associate vice chancellor for health affairs and vice dean of the School of Medicine, has been appointed to the nationally recognized accrediting body for U. S. and Canadian medical schools.Woodward will serve a three-year term beginning July 1 as a member of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association. The U. S. Department of Education recognizes the committee for accreditation of medical degree education programs in the United States. Most state boards of licensure require that U. S. medical schools earn accreditation from the LCME, signifying that they meet national standards for a medical degree education.According to Dr. Dan Jones, chancellor of the University of Mississippi, UMMC faculty have served as site visitors before, "but no one from the university has served on the LCME board itself.""This high-profile, national position is important for Dr. Woodward and for our university," Jones said.
