MDA honors Crews for humanitarian efforts
Dr. Karen Crews, professor and director of the Division of Oral Oncology and Bio-behavioral Medicine in the Department of Otolaryngology, received the Mississippi Dental Association’s 2012 Humanitarian Award at the organization’s annual meeting in June.
Outgoing MDA president Dr. J. Kevin Holman presented the award.
Crews volunteers annually for Oral Cancer Awareness Week, is a member of the American Heart Association Circle of Red, has served on the executive committee for the Baptist Medical Cancer Center’s Red Dress Campaign and serves as director of the ACT Center for Tobacco Treatment, Education and Research.
The ACT Center has treated more than 20,000 patients since opening in 1999 and has expanded to sites across the state.
Dang to give oncology presentation
Dr. Thao P. Dang, associate professor of medicine at the University of Virginia, will present "North Pathway in Lung Cancer: Where Are We Now?" at noon on Monday, July 9, in room G-151 on the first floor of the Guyton Library.

Retirement Benefits Fair slated July 11-13
Representatives of the 403(b) Tax Sheltered Annuity Plan, the 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan, the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) Plan and the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) will be available to answer questions, enroll new participants and assist current participants with any changes they would like to make to their retirement packages during a Retirement Benefits Fair from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. July 11-13 in the Classroom Wing.
The representatives will be available on Wednesday, July 11, in rooms 210, 211 and 212; on Thursday, July 12, in rooms 108 and 109; and on Friday, July 13, in rooms 210, 211 and 212.

Xu to present physiology seminar
Dr. Jun Xu, assistant professor of biomedical sciences at Tufts University and investigator at the Autism Consortium in Boston, will present "Sex Differences in Health and Disease: The Involvement of Epigenetic Chromatin Remodeling" from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.
