At three days old, Georgianna Joe's youngest son Zavin breathed strangely.
The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning took an important step toward the implementation of electronic health records (EHR) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center Aug. 19 when it approved UMMC's agreement with EPIC Systems Corp. to replace the Medical Center's hospital information system.
Imagine every ambulance in Mississippi equipped with state-of-the-art video and audio capabilities so first responders and emergency personnel can communicate with hospitals while they are actively treating critical patients, even in the most remote locations.
Whether physiology researcher Dr. Lusha Xiang puts a football-sized, genetically modified obese rat or a normal, lean rat on a treadmill to carefully monitor its oxygen use, heart rate and blood pressure, he's confident he'll get accurate results.
When pharmacy student and avid runner Brian McCrate felt inspired to launch a UMMC running club, he wasn't quite sure where to begin. So he contacted the one person most students turn to when they need help outside the classroom - Dr. Jerry Clark.
Dr. Phil Rhodes, professor of pediatrics and neonatologist, laughs as former patient Mamie Green of Greenwood, 2, squirms out of his arms while her twin, Ann Grace, and mother, Claire, look on at the NICU Reunion Party Aug. 21 in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union. The reunion, which takes place every other year and is hosted by the Junior League of Jackson and the Friends of Children's Hospital, allows former NICU patients and families to celebrate the now-thriving patients with NICU staff.
