Health information management is going digital. With computer information systems evolving and the nationwide push for Electronic Health Records looking ahead to a paperless world, UMMC's Health Informatics and Information Management Program finds itself once again changing with the times.
When nurses Brenda Watt and Brandi Winans came up with the idea to examine whether R.N.s preferred a new coma scale over the industry-standard scale, they found all the research guidance and assistance they needed in the School of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
A sure sign that summer is drawing to a close is the sudden spike in the amount of foot traffic tracing across the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Having enjoyed summer breaks and vacations, students and employees are getting back to class and back to business, and they are returning to find a Medical Center that is ever-evolving and improving.
Jumping into a series of books by a British zoologist during teenage summers in Nigeria led Dr. Donald Sittman to a career in science. The books, by Gerald Durrell, marked the beginning of a winding road taking Sittman, long a familiar personality at UMMC, from early thoughts of zoo keeping to his recent appointment as chair of the Medical Center's biochemistry department.
To celebrate the Jackson Heart Study's 10th anniversary, organizers plan a scientific conference that will both mark progress in understanding disease disparities among African-Americans and help shape the study in the coming years.
Jan Magee Evers and her late husband, Dr. Carl G. Evers, have a long history with the University of Mississippi Medical Center that stretches back to 1956. In the decades since, the couple has provided more than service and health care at the Medical Center: they have left a legacy of charitable giving that continues to grow.
Dr. Jerry Clark, associate dean in the School of Medicine, helps first-year medical student Ashley Winford into her short white coat during the 2010 White Coat Ceremony Aug. 5 at the Norman C. Nelson Student Union. Winford was one of 135 incoming students to receive their coats at the event. The coats, emblazoned with the student's name and school's escutcheon, symbolize the owner is a physician in training.
