The term "telemergency" doesn't get much response from Lisa and James Brewer of Richton. Their son, T.J., was the victim of an accidental gunshot wound to the chest on New Year's Day 2008. His was the kind of injury most don't survive.

In Memoriam: Maureen C. Twiss

Maurine C. Twiss, the first public relations officer at UMMC, died May 8. She was 96.

Sprayberry award presentation

Dr. Gary Reeves, left, dean of the School of Dentistry, and Audrey Spraberry Beasley present the Chris Sprayberry Award to third-year dental student Jon Flint during the school's honors day ceremony April 26. The $1,000 award is the first to be given from the Class of 1995 Endowment named for Chris Spraberry, a Gulfport dentist who died in 2009. The award is presented annually to a third-year student who demonstrates excellence in preclinical sciences. Audrey Spraberry Beasley is Chris' sister.
