The 1950 Mississippi Legislature enlarged and strengthened health professions education in Mississippi by enacting bills to establish and construct the Medical Center in Jackson as part of the University of Mississippi. The School of Medicine and graduate program enrolled students in 1955; the School of Nursing moved from the parent campus to Jackson in 1956; the School of Health Related Professions was established in 1971; the School of Dentistry, authorized in 1973, admitted its first class in 1975. The graduate program was elevated to school status in 2001 and designated the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences. Teaching hospitals for all programs are the 722-bed University Hospitals and Clinics, the state’s principal diagnostic and referral center.

Fall 2003 enrollment on the health sciences campus totaled 1,773. Of that number, 394 are medical students; 122 are dental students; 225 are nursing students; 469 are house staff or fellows; 280 are in health related professions; 231 are in graduate programs; and 52 are in certificate training programs. Mississippi residents made up 82 percent of the student body, and represent 81 of the state’s 82 counties. Currently, the Medical Center’s full-time and part-time faculty totals 776.
