So You Have the Flu. What Now?

If you think you have the flu, you may be out of work or school for a week or longer. Take the following precautions to get well and avoid infecting others:

  • Know signs and symptoms of the flu.
  • Stay at home and avoid travel as much as possible until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without using medication.
  • If you leave your house, wear a face mask and cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.
  • Avoid contact with other people. Wear a face mask while others are in the same room as you.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Drink plenty of clear fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Seek medical care immediately if you are having difficulty breathing or are getting worse.
