Education Overview

UMMC is a thriving health sciences campus and medical center located in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi's capital city. As the only academic health science center in Mississippi, UMMC is the leader in providing health care professionals for the state. Additionally, UMMC is the sole provider for baccalaureate and professional degrees in disciplines such as medical, dental, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and dental hygiene. The wide variety of programs of study leads to careers that are in ever-increasing demand in Mississippi and beyond.

 

Preference for admission is given to Mississippi residents in an effort to supply professionals to meet the state's health care needs. UMMC has a diverse student population drawn from all counties within Mississippi. Service learning is an important component of the curriculum as students learn firsthand how to serve fellow Mississippians.

 

UMMC has 1,900 students enrolled in twenty eight degree programs offered through the Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professions, Graduate Studies in the Health sciences, Medicine, and Nursing while an additional 530 residents and fellows are receiving graduate medical training.

 

With a growing student population, competitive programs, and superior faculty and health care providers, UMMC is achieving its mission of excellence in education, research, and patient care.

Dr. Joe Files

Dr. Joe Files, professor of medicine and director of the Division of Hematology, will travel to San Diego this week to receive his mastership from the American College of Physicians, joining a select group of Mississippi physicians who have received the national organization's highest recognition.


"It's really quite a unique honor for me to receive this award. For service, this is the highest honor they bestow," Files said.
