Core facilities collaborate across departments, universities, states and nations.

The main goal of the Analytical and Assay Core is to provide support for various radioimmunoassays, enzyme-linked immunoassays (ELISA), molecular, and chemical analyses. These facilities and services are available to all members of the department and to collaborators at UMMC as well as other educational and research institutions.
Analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) methods provide simultaneous velocity and equilibrium experiments so that protein associative behavior in solution can be explored in detail. The facility includes a Beckman XLA Analytical Ultracentrifuge equipped with absorption optics, an AVIV FDS system for fluorescence detection, an Anton Paar DMA 5000 for density measurements, and an Anton Paar AMVm micro viscometer.
The mission of the Animal Behavior Core facility is to improve the scope and competitiveness of functional CNS research at UMMC, COBRE and INBRE facilities in Mississippi.
The Biomedical Materials Science Program is a comprehensive program which includes faculty in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. These facilities allow research and characterization of a diverse range of materials (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites), of a wide range of properties (physical, mechanical, electrochemical, biological, etc.), and at all levels of interest - from atomistic to macroscopic.
Phoenix Technical Services, Inc. (PTS), a locally-owned company, provides integrated repair and preventative maintenance services on-site to the UMMC research departments.
The UMMC Cancer Institute Flow Cytometry Core Facility provides state-of-the-art flow cytometry analysis and related services to the UMMC research community and affiliated institutions. Flow cytometry analysis and sorting, as well as consultation for experimental design and data interpretation are provided.
The Histology Core Facility offers a variety of services including general histology, specialized histological staining, immunohistochemistry, light microscopy and image analysis. Training in various techniques is also available.
The core provides the instrumentation and analytical expertise to perform quantitative analysis of a variety of endogenous compounds including: lipids (prostaglandins, isoprostanes, Cyp eicosanoids), catecholamines, creatinine, carbon monoxide, citrulline assay (NOS activity), steroid hormones and circulating peptides (angiotensin II and Ang1-7).
The Imaging Core of the Center for Psychiatric
Neuroscience can assist in sample preparation, microscope-based image analyses
such as confocal laser scanning microscopy, 3-dimensional object counting
(stereology), 2-dimensional gray level analysis, single or double-label
immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence labeling and Western blotting. Core
personnel can either provide the service or train users.
The Laboratory Animal Facilities operates as a research-support entity for the University of Mississippi Medical Center. This organization provides the management and resources to maintain full accreditation by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. Efforts by the Laboratory Animal Facilities are 100% service-based to University Medical Center animal-based research programs. Support functions include daily animal husbandry requirements, animal quarantine and conditioning programs, animal surgical and anesthetic support, laboratory animal veterinary medical care programs, and regulatory support.
The Molecular and Genomics Core provides expertise in molecular, cell biology and genetic technologies to researchers at UMMC and across the region. The core facility is equipped to perform genetic and genomic analysis on human and several model organisms, including rat and mouse. The Core provides a variety of genomics services, including sample processing, genotyping, sequencing, gene expression and early stage bioinformatics analysis.
The Non-Embryonic Stem Cell Core is available to support investigators interested in stem cell research in the fields of cancer and regenerative medicine. NESCC is part of the infrastructure to support and conduct basic and clinical research related to stem cells. Services include: isolate, expand and distribute cancer stem cells for investigator-initiated studies; expand and distribute human iPS cells; isolate and expand adult stem cells such as Mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow and adipose tissue; develop cutting edge stem cell technologies and establish new iPS and stem differentiation protocols for human diseases; provide seminars, workshops, and hands-on training on stem cell research; provide consultation on stem cell research protocol design and grant preparation planning; and develop collaborative studies to utilize cancer stem cells for preclinical studies.
The Transgenic Core provides microinjection service of fertilized mouse embryos for the production of transgenic mice for the research community of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The Transgenic Core can also provide interested investigators help in the design of transgenic constructs as well as in genotyping of transgenic mice.
The Postmortem Brain Core of the Center for Psychiatric Neuroscience provides tissue specimens from human and non-human primate brain. The human samples are from normal control subjects and psychiatrically-characterized subjects, permitting studies on major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, psychoactive substance use disorders and smoking. Immunohistochemistry, cell counting, Western blotting, and gene expression studies can be performed on samples. Brain tissues are also available from male and female non-human primates exposed long-term to an antidepressant medication. A laser capture microdissection system, with fluorescence capabilities, is available to capture a single cell or pure multiple cell types from specific regions of tissue sections, permitting increased sensitivity and accuracy of downstream biological assays on discrete populations of cells.
