  • Welcome SOM Class of 2018

Congratulations and welcome to the University of Mississippi School Of Medicine.

The freshman medical year 2014-2015 is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at 7:45 a.m. in R153 (see map below). You’ll receive a packet of information during the summer via U.S. Postal Service with schedules, details and other important resources. Be certain to have your driver’s license, laptop and a ballpoint pen with you on the first day. You are asked to be dressed in business casual attire. In the event extenuating circumstances preclude you from being present on Aug. 6, notify me promptly.

The White Coat Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Belhaven Center for the Arts on Thursday, Aug. 7. Each student will be allowed to bring three guests to this function. The male attire for this ceremony is suit/sport jacket and tie and the female attire is dress/skirt or dressy pants outfit.

We have organized a Family Orientation Day, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 8, beginning at 9 a.m.. The program is designed to help answer questions about the institution, medical school curriculum, services available to the student and discuss the families’ role as a support. The program will last until roughly 3 p.m., is not mandatory, and will include a noon meal. Please consider making your family aware of this fun and popular program. Sign-up and additional information can be found on the Family Day website https://apps.umc.edu/somfamilyday/addReply.action

As you know, parking for medical students is available in the stadium parking lot located immediately west of the medical center on North State Street. Information on student service resources is available on the student affairs website http://www.umc.edu/som_studentaffs/.

Please be advised that you will be receiving a packet from the Veterans Administration Medical Center via e-mail. These documents will help you prepare for access to the VA, a critical element in your training.

In the short term, you should consider activating your MyU Portal where you can access and check your UMMC Financial Aid Status. I’ve included at this site detailed instructions for activating your MyU Portal. The web portal allows students to accept or decline their financial aid awards instantly. Make sure you complete this step to ensure your Financial Aid is available to you in a timely manner. Once you are in the MyU portal, notice the “New Student” tab. Please validate your personal information at “My Profile,” then “Contact Information.” On this screen you will be able to view your UM SoM email, view/update your personal email, cell phone, permanent address, and local mailing address. The MyU portal is only compatible with Internet Explorer versions 7, 8, and 9 and Mozilla Firefox.

You’ll want to make sure you password is reset, too. Go to https://password.umc.edu/CAS/index.jsp and enter your data to reset your password. If you have any problems call (601) 984-1145.

My goal is to provide the necessary information, support, guidance and resources needed for your success. I’m available by email, by telephone, and in person to respond to questions, coordinate services, and/or address concerns. Please don't hesitate to let me know how to best assist you.

    Sincerely,
