Grad School Highlights Student Research

The 6th annual School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences' Research Day was held on Friday, October 19, 2012 in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union at UMMC. The all-day event began with an early morning breakfast buffet followed by oral presentations. Dr. Helen Turner received the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Dr. Turner entered graduate school at UMMC in the department of Microbiology, completing her Ph.D. in 1975. Her research and dissertation focused on the Studies of Membrane-Associated Iron-Transport Factors in Bacillus megaterium. With the encouragement of her major professor, Dr. Rowe Byers, she entered medical school and graduated in 1979. She subsequently completed residency training in internal medicine, fellowship training in infectious diseases, then joined the faculty at UMMC as a staff physician at the VAMC. At the VAMC she held leadership positions as associate chief of staff for education and chief of medical service. In 1993, she moved to UMMC to become associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Medicine.
