  • Welcome from the Dean

Dean PicWelcome to the School of Health Related Professions (SHRP) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Originally established in 1971, SHRP has trained more than 2,500 allied-health professionals across the state over the past 40 years.

Located on UMMC’s Jackson campus, the school began by offering certificates in dental hygiene and medical records administration. In 1973, SHRP added physical therapy, which became the school’s first baccalaureate offering. Since then, the school has grown steadily and now offers bachelor’s degrees in medical laboratory science, cytotechnology, dental hygiene, health sciences, health informatics and information management, and radiologic sciences. SHRP also offers a Master of Occupational Therapy, a Master of Health Sciences,a Master of Health Informatics and Information Management, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Health Administration, and a post-baccalaureate certificate in nuclear medicine.

More students have been attracted to health-care careers, and our enrollment has grown along with our course offerings. This fall, the school reached a record enrollment of more than 750 students.

SHRP features a state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory building, one of the finest facilities in the country for health-related professions. Completed in 1999, the building features therapy skills laboratories, clinical laboratories and a newly completed radiologic simulation laboratory.

One of SHRP’s overall goals is to prepare and encourage health care providers to practice in rural and medically underserved parts of the state. We welcome all students around the state to consider our programs.

To that end, we have tried to make it easier for place-bound students to further their educations at SHRP without leaving their hometowns. In 2011, we announced our 2+U program, a collaboration between SHRP and the state's 15 community and junior colleges. The 2+U program is designed to identify and recruit highly qualified students early, so that upon graduation from an allied health program at a Mississippi community college, they can enter the work force and simultaneously enroll in one of our five online baccalaureate programs.

If you are interested in a career where you have opportunities to make a difference in the lives of your fellow Mississippians, whatever the setting, SHRP may have just the program for you. Give us a call at (601) 984-6332, or e-mail us on this website to learn more about any of our programs.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Jessica H. Bailey, Ph.D, RHIA, CCS
Interim Dean of School of Health Related Professions
