HBCU students join UMMC's research efforts
Tougaloo College student Diva Whalen of Clinton presents her findings during the annual Prostate Cancer Research Mini-symposium July 30 in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.
Whalen was among six undergraduates at historically black colleges and universities who completed a 10-week program at UMMC that focuses on eradicating prostate cancer.
The collaborative effort between UMMC, Tougaloo College and Jackson State University gave student researchers the chance to search for a prostate cancer cure by working alongside faculty mentors from UMMC’s Cancer Institute.
The program seeks to train students from HBCUs so they can pursue doctorates and medical degrees and increase diversity in biomedical and cancer research.
