Motor company lends hand, raises hope
Mary Ellis Cravey, 11, of Madison, prepares to put her other handprint on the Hope on Wheels automobile during a Sept. 10 press conference in which Hyundai Motor Company presented a $250,000 research grant to Dr. Chindo Hicks, associate professor of medicine.
Hicks will investigate why American children of European ancestry have higher survival rates than American children of African ancestry when faced with lymphoblastic leukemia.
Batson Children's Hospital is one of 41 recipients of Hope on Wheels' 2013 Hyundai Hope Grants. Hope on Wheels will award $10.25 million in grants during September as part of a national campaign to help raise awareness of childhood cancer.
