Millsaps honors UMMC faculty with degrees
One current and one former Medical Center faculty member each received honorary doctorates from Millsaps College during the school's Commencement May 11 at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson.
Dr. Aaron Shirley, chairman of the board for the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation, director of community medical services and associate professor of pediatrics, received the Doctor of Public Service. The first African-American resident at the Medical Center, Shirley is credited with leading the development of the Jackson Medical Mall into a state-of-the-art ambulatory health-care facility.
Rev. Ed King, an original faculty member in the School of Health Related Professions, received the Doctor of Divinity. A 1958 graduate of Millsaps, King served as an associate professor of sociology and medical ethics in SHRP from 1974-2005.
