Sherman succeeds Guice as MRPSP executive
Lena native Jennifer Wahnee Sherman is the new executive director of the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program, taking over from Janie Guice, who retired in January.
Sherman returns to Mississippi after working nearly four years in Tuscaloosa, Ala., directing community service opportunities for more than 30,000 students at the University of Alabama. Before that, she had various positions at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, including assistant vice president for student services.
Sherman, who has a doctorate of education from the University of Alabama, has also had administrative positions at the University of Memphis and at Mississippi State University, where she earned her undergraduate and master's degrees.
Headquartered at UMMC, the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program recently awarded $1.6 million in state-funded scholarships to more than 50 medical students committed to practicing primary care medicine in rural communities after completing their medical training.
