Liver transplant program revived after hiatus
Jackson resident Karen Battle, right, UMMC's first liver-transplant patient in 22 years, speaks with reporters March 14 along with Medical Center transplant team members, from left, Dr. Brian Borg, associate professor of digestive diseases and the state's only transplant hepatologist and Dr. Christopher Anderson, associate professor of transplant surgery and division chief of liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgery.
The renewal of UMMC's liver transplant program means Mississippians are able to stay closer to home for pre-operative visits, transplantation and follow-up care. When the program stopped in 1991, approximately 60 patients a year had to go outside Mississippi for liver transplantation.
