By Patrice Guilfoyle

Dr. Alexander P. Auchus, professor and McCarty Chair of Neurology, has been elected to the American Neurological Association, the world's oldest neurological society and one of the earliest academic societies in the United States. Founded in 1875, the ANA is a professional society of academic neurologists and neuroscientists devoted to advancing the goals of academic neurology.

Auchus, a Northeast Jackson resident, also has been certified in the subspecialty of geriatric neurology by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. He is the only physician in the South so certified, and is one of only several dozen in the nation.

Auchus, founding co-director of UMMC's Comprehensive Stroke Center, holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and Washington University in St. Louis and is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and of the American Geriatrics Society.
