UMMC doc offers public forum for asthmatics

Greenville area residents who want to know more about keeping asthma under control are invited to a special presentation at noon on Friday at the Delta Regional Medical Center Pavilion, 1693 Fairground Road in Greenville.
Dr. Gailen Marshall, professor of medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and director of the allergy and immunology division, will give the presentation. Marshall has been seeing asthma patients at the Good Samaritan Clinic in Greenville since August 2009.
"We want to give asthma patients and their families the latest information about asthma so they more easily recognize the warning signs of poor asthma control," Marshall said. Uncontrolled asthma can lead to costly visits to emergency rooms.
The presentation will also include information about what exposures can make asthma worse, what medicines to use and for what purpose and what sort of lifestyle changes can make asthma easier to control on an everyday basis.
"The ultimate goal of good asthma care is a normal, healthy lifestyle," he said.
Marshall sees patients in the Good Samaritan Clinic on the second and fourth Fridays of each month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment only. Patients do not need a physician referral to get an appointment.
The public event is sponsored by the Delta Health Alliance and UMMC. Refreshments will be served to the first 50 attendees.
