UMMC prostate cancer treatment expert, to be available for interviews, lead facilities tour

Media Contact: Jack Mazurak at 601-984-1970 or jmazurak@umc.edu.

WHAT: UMMC prostate cancer expert Dr. Srinivasan Vijayakumar, professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, will lead a tour of the department’s treatment areas and be available for interviews as part of the department’s public outreach during National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

WHEN: Tomorrow 10-11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 15

WHERE: UMMC Department of Radiation Oncology, Jackson Medical Mall. Inside the main mall area on the north end

WHY: At 25-29 deaths per 100,000 people, prostate cancer kills far too many Mississippi men every year. And unfortunately Mississippi has among of the highest rates nationally for both incidence and death from prostate cancer, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These rates can be drastically reduced through awareness, prevention and screenings. Dr. Vijayakumar, professor of radiation oncology, will be available to discuss these topics.
