• Class Reserve Materials

The Library Reserve function allows a large number of students access to a few selected materials within a set amount of time.  Items placed on Class Reserve are kept behind the Circulation Desk and are checked out to students for one two-hour period of time.  An individual can renew an item for an additional two hours if no one has placed a hold on the item. Materials must be returned to the Circulation Desk by the end of the two-hour period or a fine will be assessed.  A bar-coded UMC ID badge is required to check materials out for in-house circulation.

It is the responsibility of the library to monitor compliance with the Copyright Guidelines for Class Reserve material as detailed in the Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code):

    • In accordance with the law, multiple copies of articles should be kept to a minimum.  Providing one copy of an article for every ten students in a class is a good rule to follow when determining the number of copies needed.

    • Materials on reserve should also meet established test of "brevity", "spontaneity" and "cumulative effect".

    • A notice of copyright is required on each item.

    • Materials may not be placed on reserve for more than one term unless permission is obtained from the copyright holder. (Sample letter for requesting permission to photocopy.) Copies of materials placed on reserve the prior semester or quarter may not be placed on reserve again without written permission from the copyright holder.

To place an item on reserve see the Class Reserve Request Form.   The library must receive materials three days before needed by students to allow for the time needed to process the items.

If you have any questions about the request form or procedures for reserve materials, please contact Antronette Bell  at 984-1230.
