The University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing operates several nurse-managed, school-based health centers in the Metro-Jackson area. These health centers are located at Brown Elementary School, Johnson Elementary School and Rowan Middle School.
The Brown Elementary School Health Center provides an accessible source of primary and episodic health services to all students. Services include comprehensive physical/mental health assessments, vision and hearing screenings, treatments for acute and chronic illness, as well as referrals to appropriate health care when an illness or treatment is out of the scope of practice for the nurse practitioner. In addition to providing monthly faculty and staff educational opportunities, clinic staff members at both Brown Elementary School and Rowan Middle School offer annual health screenings for faculty and staff, including vital signs, height and weight, BMI, vision and hearing screenings and cardiovascular and musculoskeletal screenings. For more than 10 years, the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing has operated the health center at Johnson Elementary School. Located in northwest Jackson, the school health center offers services to over 400 students and 40 faculty and staff. These services include medication prescriptions, laboratory testing, Early Prevention Screening Detection Treatment (EPSDT) screenings, immunizations and referrals to other health-care providers for further services. Both the Brown Elementary School Health Center and the Rowan Middle School Health Center opened their doors in 2008. Since that time, nurse practitioners have provided ongoing assessments, medical care and treatments for chronic illnesses, such as asthma, seizures, eczema, psoriasis and obesity, on a routine basis. Clinic staff members diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses and provide one-on-one educational sessions for both parents and children.
