  • Place Matters

Place Matters is a nationwide initiative of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, Health Policy Institute. The initiative is intended to improve the health of participating communities by addressing social conditions that lead to poor health. Currently, two Mississippi Place Matters partnerships represent five counties: the Mid-Mississippi Delta Partnership (Coahoma, Sunflower and Washington counties) and the South Delta Partnership (Sharkey and Issaquena counties).

The School of Nursing, under the leadership of Dr. Sharon Wyatt, is collaborating with the South Delta Place Matters team to address the social determinants of obesity, particularly childhood obesity. The South Delta Place Matters initiative envisions safe and healthy communities where residents live, play, work and worship. The team is working with community coalitions to improve options and policies for healthy eating and healthy living to increase healthy weight among children and their families.
