Dr. Laura Schenk began her nursing career as a staff nurse in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics in 1971; briefly worked at the University of Virginia Pediatric Rehabilitation Hospital in 1974; and continued her experience at Minneapolis Children's Hospital in the NICU from 1975 to 1980. She worked at the Dallas Children's Hospital in 1981 part time and then part time at the HCA Medical Center of Plano, Texas, until moving to Mississippi in 1988. She completed her MSN in 1992 with a nursing education focus and a post-master's in 1994 as a neonatal nurse clinician. She earned her Ph.D. in 2005 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing. While teaching primarily in the baccalaureate and master's-level programs, she also has been and continues to be a member of dissertation committees. She has been a junior-level coordinator for two years and has had many committee memberships and chairs. She is a past chair of the Mississippi Nurses Association Research Council and a past member of the Mississippi Nurses Association board of directors. Currently, she serves as chair of the Mississippi Nurses Foundation Grant Committee. She serves the university as a member of the Hospital Research and Quality Council and a member of the Faculty Promotion and Tenure Committee. She currently is developing an educational program for mothers of premature infants who reside at the Ronald McDonald House in Jackson.
