Joyce M. Johnson has been an instructor in the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing since 2009, when she began teaching in the Traditional BSN program. Currently teaching in the Accelerated BSN program, she received a BSN in 1986 from the University of South Carolina and a master's in health nursing as a family nurse practitioner in 1991. She served as a registered nurse in critical care, medical-surgical and labor and delivery from 1986 to 2000. As a clinical nurse instructor, she has worked at South Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina, Our Lady of the Lakes and Southeastern Louisiana University, providing teaching in variety of areas including fundamentals of nursing, health assessment, medical-surgical, geriatrics and maternal-child health. As a nurse practitioner, she has worked in private practice, clinic settings and the juvenile justice system. Her research interests include women's health, adolescent health and teamwork. She currently is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau, the American Nurses Association and the Mississippi Nurses Association.
