    Biography

    Dr. Cindy Luther serves as director of the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner tracks at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and program director for the Mississippi Educational Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing (MECSAPN). She also teaches in the MSN and DNP programs. She is certified as a family nurse practitioner and gerontological nurse practitioner, and practices in a rural health clinic. In clinical practice, her special interests are prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and care of older adults and their caregivers. She maintains certification by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry as a clinical densitometrist.

    She has experience in staff and patient education, as well as nursing administration, and has served as chief nurse executive for an acute care hospital and home health agency. In addition to organizing and managing multidisciplinary outpatient clinics dedicated to the care of older adults, she has worked as a nurse practitioner for over 15 years. As a nurse educator, she has taught in the RN-BSN, RN-MSN and graduate programs. She also served as coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner track and has taught nurse practitioner students for over eight years.

    She is an active member of the Mississippi Nurses Association, having served on the MNA board of directors for four terms. She is an active member of MNA's advanced practice council and CE provider unit. She was appointed to serve as a MNA representative to Blue Cross Blue Shield's nurse practitioner advisory council and the planning and advisory panel for the Mississippi State Department of Mental Health. She is a board member of the Alzheimer's Association of Mississippi and frequently speaks to professional and community audiences on topics related to bone health, osteoporosis treatment, health promotion, dementias and mental health issues of older adults. She is the recipient of the 2011 Excellence in Education Award from the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses' Association.
