Faculty development for new and existing faculty, as well as new and existing course directors, is provided by the SOM Office of Academic Affairs. Instruction in areas such as goals and objectives, teaching methods, and assessment of students is conducted through orientations, course director retreats and online resources. The associate dean for academic affairs instructs new faculty regarding curriculum and evaluations during faculty on-boarding orientation each month. Additionally, a recurring course directors retreat , sponsored by the SOM Office of Academic Affairs, is held with presentations by UMMC administration and outside consultants to help faculty improve teaching methods. Instruction in online resources or testing software is also given, as needed, at the monthly Curriculum Committee meetings. New course directors are oriented to the topics of goals and objectives, teaching methods, and assessment of students by the associate dean for academic affairs. The Course Director’s Guide was developed by a subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee and is a reference document that is actively used.
The SOM Office of Academic Affairs also provides staff development for the administrative course coordinators during its annual course coordinators’ workshop. The workshop provides instruction in course and student management, input of required assessments and course best practices.
