  • Academic Counseling

    The Office of Academic Affairs manages the Academic Achievement Program (AAP), which is the foundation of the system for counseling and remediation.

    At measured points throughout the first and second year of medical school, students are identified as at risk for academic difficulty based on a coordinated system of measuring progress, and are enrolled in the AAP. Each participant is assigned an individual adviser who closely monitors a small group of students. Each participant is encouraged to take advantage of an array of available resources.

    Additional referral resources for students include the director of student/employee health, the associate dean for student affairs, the associate dean for multicultural affairs, the director of academic counseling services and LifeSynch (see MS-18 for more information). Students also may self-refer to any of these programs and services.

    The availability of academic advising, academic counseling, health services and personal and mental health services is described at the time of orientation. These services are listed in the UMMC Bulletin and student handbook and can be accessed in multiple student-focused areas on the UMMC website.

    There are available resources for both academic and non-academic difficulties. Course directors and faculty work with individual medical students, or groups of medical students, who wish to delve more deeply into subject matter or who may need assistance with the course material. Review or help sessions are scheduled as part of course outlines and arranged when requested. Course directors communicate regularly with the dean's office and refer students for additional services when students perform marginally or unsatisfactorily in their respective course. Tutoring services are available upon request at no cost to the student.
