  • Selection of Residents and Fellows

    There are 54 accredited medical residency and fellowship programs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Most programs participate in the NRMP and most programs accept applications through ERAS. Individuals should contact the director of the program in which they are interested for specific application information.

    Selection is based upon academic records, recommendation letters and interviews without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, marital or veteran status, age, or disability.

    Residents at the University of Mississippi Medical Center must obtain a Mississippi medical license. One requirement of the licensure board is that applicants must have passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 - Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Skills (CS) before a restricted temporary license will be issued and must have passed USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK and CS and Step 3 to be eligible for a permanent license. Graduates of foreign medical schools must pass USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK and CS to be eligible for a Limited Institutional License.

    An applicant without United States citizenship must have a J-1 visa or a Permanent Resident Card in order to be employed as a resident at UMMC.

    Graduates of foreign medical schools must have an ECFMG certificate. All parts of it must be current when the applicant begins the residency program.

    In an effort to conform to the nature of the selection and matching process relative to placement in our resident programs, UMMC will require each resident to submit to a drug screen immediately upon arrival on campus or during the initial orientation program. Residents will be fingerprinted and background investigations will be conducted to include previous employment, licensing, certifications, criminal, credit, and personal references.

    Salary scales and fringe benefits are commensurate with those of other university hospitals in the South. Residents are provided professional liability coverage for activities for or on behalf of the hospital within the scope of the residency training programs. View salary and benefit information.

    Health insurance coverage is provided for residents without charge and is effective on the date of employment. Two-party coverage and family plan hospitalization is available. Group life insurance is available at reduced rate. Accident, catastrophic illness, cancer care, intensive care, dental, vision and disability insurance are also available. Residents participate in either the State of Mississippi retirement program through the Public Employees Retirement Plan (PERS) or the Optional Retirement Plan. Residents may choose from a variety of investment portfolios offered by several vendors. A special tax deferred annuity plan is available through the Comptroller's office.

    Parking for residents is free.

    There are numerous apartments and houses located in the area surrounding the Medical Center.
