    Bylaws

    • The Surgery Interest Group is a non-profit, volunteer-run student organization at The University of Mississippi School of Medicine. Any student currently enrolled in The University of Mississippi School of Medicine is eligible for membership.
    • The Surgery Interest Group will meet monthly during the school year, from September to April, and more often if deemed necessary by the members.
    • The Surgery Interest Group will be governed by a selected body of medical students that consists of a president, co-vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, class representatives, social chair and other positions deemed necessary by the executive officers. Officers will be selected by an application process at the end of each academic year by the executive officers of the Surgery Interest Group.
    • The Surgery Interest Group will work closely with a faculty sponsor in the Department of Surgery.

    Duties of executive officers

    • President
      • Direct and facilitate all SIG activities
      • To be the official student spokesperson for the SIG
      • To supervise all other executive officers in the SIG
      • To be active and present in all SIG meetings and activities unless a conflict arises
    • Co-Vice President
      • To assist in the planning and execution of all SIG meetings and activities
      • To appoint additional staff members if the executive officers deem it necessary
      • To keep the Department of Surgery and the faculty advisor informed of all funds and balances if such funds should ever arise
      • To be active and present in all SIG meetings and activities unless a conflict arises
    • Treasurer
      • Shall formulate a budget for the SIG
      • To be responsible for all SIG finances
      • To work with the Vice President to keep the Department of Surgery and faculty advisor informed of all funds and balances if such funds should ever arise
      • To take attendance at all SIG Officers’ meetings if secretary is not present
      • To record the minutes at all SIG Officers’ meetings if the secretary is not present
      • To be active and present in all SIG meetings and activities unless a conflict arises
    • Secretary
      • To establish and maintain communications with the Department of Surgery and other UMMC officials
      • To assist the President and Vice President in the planning and execution of all SIG meetings and activities
      • To take attendance at all SIG Officers’ meetings
      • To record the minutes at all SIG Officers’ meetings
      • To establish and maintain the official SIG website
      • To be active and present in all SIG meetings and activities unless a conflict arises
    • Additional staff members of the SIG and their foreseen duties will be established as deemed necessary by the executive officials.

    Meetings

    • SIG meetings shall be held monthly as schedules dictate.
    • Topics and activities for SIG will be coordinated at meetings with the faculty advisor.
    • SIG Officers’ meetings shall be held on the first Thursday of every month and may be rescheduled by a majority vote if deemed necessary.
    • A minimum of two SIG officers’ meetings shall be held per semester to maintain official SIG business.
    • Attendance will be required for all SIG officers at all SIG meetings and activities unless a conflict arises.
    • Professional attire shall be required of all SIG officers at official SIG meetings and activities (does not apply to SIG officers’ meetings).

    Amendments

    • Amendments to the constitution must be approved by the faculty advisor and officers with a majority vote.

    Membership

    • Any student enrolled in the School of Medicine with an interest in surgery will be allotted membership to the Surgery Interest Group of the University Of Mississippi School Of Medicine.
    • There will be no GPA or classification requirements, duties or expulsion procedures for members.
